Looking for a cheapish, clean, downtown hotel in Chicago for overnight stop. Safe neighbourhood.
Any help greatly appreciated!!

Take a look at the Best Western River North or the Red Roof Inn on Ontario St.
Downtown in general is safe. If you give us your specific date(s) and budget, the hotel gurus on this forum will be happy to help.

Thanks for the help. We will be staying overnight on 24 July. Budget maybe $125-175 per room.
If you%26#39;re comfortable with a pre-paid, non-cancellable and non-refundable deal, Hotwire has a 3* property in the Michigan Ave/Gold Coast neighborhood for $89. It%26#39;s probably the Tremont Hotel.
Just got back from Chicago. We stayed at the Ramada Inn on S. Lakeshore Dr. Very resonable and close to museums.

I would really recommend Hotwire. Anyone that has come to visit me has used it and gotten 200 a night rooms @90. Not to mention they give you the stars (which are usually 4), amenities and general location before you purchase.
Another good site to consider for downtown Chicago is:

As there are sometimes lots of conventions, etc. it can be hard to get a room, but this site can usually come thru, however, you prepay. But, you can still cancel, but I think they keep something like $25 - I had to do that once. I%26#39;ve used the site many times and it has always been reliable.
Chicago native who returns from Boston several times/year: I am a very big fan of priceline name your own price feature. I always start with a price for a 4-star hotel, then modify to a 3-star and/or up the offer a bit. My favorite win by far has been the Intercontinental on Michigan Avenue. Although you won%26#39;t be upgraded to a room in the old tower, make sure to stop at the pool in the old tower. It reminds me a the old-fashioned spa-type pools and is totally glamourous.
In other adventures I%26#39;ve been to the Marriott on North Michigan several times. I still use its lounge area as a great meeting place for friends when I visit.
Also, stay away from the State Street area at night, as once the businesses close down only troublemakers tend to hang around. Otherwise I frequently walk the neighborhood late at night and never had a problem when I lived there nor when I visit.
Back in 2003, stayed at the Travelodge. Superb price, great service.
