Help w/ 2nd Trip-This week!

Hello Everyone! This is my second trip to Chicago, wanted to return because I did not get to see everything! Unfortunately, I booked the flight and Hotel before my “find a house” fever took over and have not planned at all.

I am mid 20’s, traveling alone. I will be staying at the Allerton Hotel on Michigan Ave, arriving tomorrow, departing Saturday morning. I stayed at the Allegro last year, though I liked, I wanted to stay in different part. I will actually be leaving downtown Friday night to stay at hotel near O’Hare for flight.

This is what I have on my list left over from last trip:

Architecture River Tour (looks like Friday based on the weather)

Hancock Observatory/lounge

Lincoln Park Zoo

Art Institute

Window Shopping

Maybe a White Sox’s game (I saw the Cubs my last trip out)

I am open for any other suggestions. Preferably cheap activities with saving pennies for house! Not into bar/party scene at all. Enjoy walking around, seeing sites, and quiet activities!

Food places are still up in the air. I usually do a bigger lunch and hit a happy hour spot for dinner and I am set. I want to keep the food budget as small as possible ($15ish for lunch, $20 for dinner including drink, breakfast I can grab a coffee)

Are there any nice happy hour spots near my hotel? I did enjoy Nick’s Fishmarket, and something Rose when I stayed last year. Not sure how far they are from my hotel this trip though. Metromix brought back a variety of bars but will not narrow by happy hour specials. I would prefer as close to my hotel as possible, walking distance since I will be alone and don’t like to take cabs (I am cheap!)

Thanks in advance for your assistance!

People generally seem to opt for river cruises to view the architecture, but I prefer seeing architecture by foot. There are a couple reasons why:

1) You can go at your own pace. Some details are hard to see when passing by on a boat moving at 5 knots.

2) The docent can put together a nicer program, i.e. emphasize themes and tell a story rather than operating within the constraints of what%26#39;s along the river.

3) My wife gives them

The Chicago Architecture Foundation offers both walking and boat tours of many different flavors.

The restaurant I you mention might be Rosebud. It%26#39;s on Rush at Superior. There%26#39;s a nice Tapas restaurant named 1492 right around the corner. That should be a nice way to help you scale the size your meal to your liking.

Are you adverse to exploring some neighborhoods?

If not, I%26#39;d plan a trip to Andersonville. You could even combine it with a trip to the Zoo. I%26#39;d go to the Zoo in the morning than catch the 22 Clark Bus north. It%26#39;s like a 20-25 min trip down Clark street until you get to Andersonville. (get off at Foster)

There you have lots of little stores, restaurants for lunch (nothing over 20 a plate either especially for lunch), boutiques, and good people watching.

That%26#39;s my neighboorhood and lots of time on a Saturday, I%26#39;ll walk all afternoon there.

Places I like:

Middle Eastern Grocery Store - cool place to poke around for spices, etc. I love the spinach and cheese pies sold there. Great for a snack.

Taste of Lebanon - chicken schwarma wrap will cost you maybe 3.00. So good.

Presence - trendy women%26#39;s clothes shop/

Simon%26#39;s - one of the oldest bars in Chicago. Al Capone used to drink there. Legend has it that there is an underground tunnel from there to the Green Mill.

Women and Children First - Feminist book shop. Nice selection of fiction.

Seva%26#39;s - excellenyt breakfast stop that won%26#39;t cost you more than 8 dollars for a huge plate of food.

Stationary store that I am forgetting the name of - fun to browse.

Huey%26#39;s Hot Dog - get a Chicago Style dog in case you didn%26#39;t last time.

I could go on but work is calling.
