Starved Rock State Park Hiking Trails??

Hi!! Can anyone tell me about the hiking trails? Are there ledges or is it gently rolling terrain? How bad is the poison ivy?

Are there any really great trails of about 3 miles in length?

Hi NervousOne

It’s been quite some time since I’ve hiked these trails, but if memory serves me, they are well marked (I believe by color code) and fairly wide so Poison Ivy wont be a problem unless you go wandering into the bush. Most of the steep areas that have drop-offs now have wooden walkways with wooden rails and stairs for easy access. If I had a small child I would be careful not to let them run around too much as some of the small canyons do not have rails around them. The link below has a .PDF file containing a map.

If you stay within a 3 mile hike you%26#39;ll have no problems with rough terrain...the biggest problem you will have is lots of stairs at the beginning. Most of the paths within a mile or two of the entrance consist of boardwalks. as you get deeper in, the trails are more natural and rustic, but still well worn and not very tough. You don%26#39;t mention what your limitation is, but I don%26#39;t see any limiting factors in the park outside of lots of uphill walking/stairclimbing, but none of the inclines require climbing or anything tougher than climing stairs.

I believe one of the paths is right around 3 miles...I dind%26#39;t check but the pdf may say more. I know the visitors center outlines some paths and includes distances.

Hi, We love starved rock. Make sure to hike a trail called horseshoe falls. The start of the trail is just down the road from the main hiking area starts. In very dry weather the waterfall is dry but in semi wet -wet weather the waterfall is Great!
