Hotel for girlfriend getaway-

We will be in Chicago 9/25 through the 29th. We like the theater, shopping, museums. We have a recommendation to do an architectural cruise? What is a convenient hotel for up to 300 per night.? Thanks.

Hotel for girlfriend getaway-

There is a 20,000 person convention taking place during these dates, which is resulting in some very high hotel rates. Additionally, it is a bit far in advance at this point for late September with hotels. My recommendation would be to book a hotel that%26#39;s refundable (read the fine print) now, then watch rates as it gets closer to your dates. If you see a better deal, you can cancel the reservation and move. If you don%26#39;t see a better deal, then at least you have a place set.

The Burnham Hotel ($249, hotelburnham.com) would be one recommendation, although not without a couple of reservations. The 4* boutique hotel is in a beautifully restored historic building in the middle of the Loop area. From the website: ';During the late 1800s, a commercial architectural style surfaced in Chicago, Illinois, later becoming known as ';the Chicago style.'; Completed in 1895, the Reliance Building was not just a premier product of this school of architecture, it was the first direct predecessor to today%26#39;s modern skyscrapers such a fundamental part of Chicago. The 14 floors of the building seem to defy gravity, thanks to an interior iron and steel frame construction and delicate glass and terra cotta fa莽ade.

At the urging of the partners who own the building, along with the City of Chicago Planning and Development Department, complete renovation and restoration work began. The result -- portions of the interior replicated from the original building. Renovation included meticulously reconstructing the mosaic floor, multi-colored marble ceiling and walls, and ornamental metal elevator grills, stairways and archways to resemble the lobby as it once existed. ';

Additionally, the hotel offers a free wine reception at night. $249 is about the average price for the Burnham during busier periods. My reservations about the hotel would be that there is a major construction project going on across the street to the North during the day. Not a problem if you%26#39;re going to be out. However, the bigger problem is that there is work being done by the Chicago Transit Authority during the night, which would be a problem if you%26#39;re a light sleeper. This hotel would be right by downtown theatres and not far from museums (the Art Institute is a few blocks away.) State St. shopping is right there, but the larger Michigan Ave. shopping area is a decent walk N/NE. Additionally, while this area is busy during the day, it can get pretty quiet later in the evening.

Another option not more than a few blocks from the Burnham is the Hampton Inn Majestic, a newer (opened early this year) boutique-style Hampton just above the Lasalle Bank theatre. You would get free breakfast included here ($239.)

In the North Michigan Ave area, I would recommend the Talbott, a cozy 4* boutique located just a block and a half away from the North Michigan Ave. shopping area. That hotel is $244 via talbotthotel.com for your dates. There is construction going on next to the Talbott as well (new condos), but that is not nearly as big as the construction project near the Burnham and is only going on during the day.
