Getaway with pregnant wife

My wife %26amp; I live in Chicago and want to get away for 4-5 days in mid June. She%26#39;s carrying twins and is in her 20th week. Can anyone give me some advice based on experience regarding nice places to visit, preferably in Midwest, where we can relax and enjoy the surroundings.

We%26#39;d like to just get away and relax, enjoy some good meals, and may see some nature, shop for antiques, etc. Thanks for your time.

Galena and Lake Geneva in IL come to mind. How about the southwest side of Michigan, such as Saugatuk and South Haven?

Been to Galena and familiar with Lake Geneva although never been. The Michigan suggestion my wife and I have spoken about, although I don%26#39;t know the areas. I%26#39;ll research them and appreciate the feedback. I%26#39;ll probably be back with some further questions.

Rock Cut State Park in Rockford has some great outdoor activities. There are some moderate hiking trails (though be careful because some get into some rough terrain and are overrun with mountain bikes...you may want to inquire) and a couple of lakes. I don%26#39;t believe there is anything other than camping for overnight accomidations, but hotels would be within a 15 minute drive and unfortunately there isn%26#39;t much else to do in Rockford...but it would be on your way to Galena.

Peoria also has some bautiful parks...wildlife prarie park, and jubilee park. on your way you could stop at rock cut...while that may be too much for a woman who%26#39;s seven months pregnant, you could probably spend a few hours there on the main trails. There are trails that aren%26#39;t too rugged. some other activities you could do around there are gambling, big al%26#39;s, the spotted cow for ice cream, Grand View Drive (which Teddy Roosevelt called ';the world%26#39;s most beautiful drive). I would recommend staying at the Mark Twain hotel on the Peoria side of the river and spring for the upgraded amenities or stay at stoney creek inn, which has fireplace and whirlpool rooms available, and if I remember right, it has great views of the rive. Next door is Jonah%26#39;s, a great seafood place, Alexander%26#39;s is a great steak place. Finally, you could head down to St. Louis....Forest park is amazing and would probably be great for your wife.

That%26#39;s a wealth of info - thanks for taking the time. We%26#39;ll definitely take a look at the suggestions and may have further questions.

by the way...I just saw your other post that focussed mroe on quaint towns and antiques...St. Charles, near St. Louis is a great little town for this.

As someone who was in your identical situation last year, I would be cautious about going anywhere.

With twins there are always issues of pre-term labor. That can be managed and controlled if appropriate medical care is obtained. However, if you are on the road and she feels a twinge, what do you do?

Our experience was at 23 weeks (due to the medical care she eventually was able to deliver at 38).

I would stay home. Enjoy a nice trip some time after the twins arrive.

Also -- Congratulations.

How far of a drive? Mackinac Island comes to mind, but I don%26#39;t know if you want to go that far away.

Nashville, Indiana - Brown County, which is about 1.25 hours SSE of Indianapolis. Maybe with a side trip over to Parke County to see the covered bridges. Many antique shops, B%26amp;Bs, boutique shops, pottery and art galleries in both areas. Oliver Winery is close to Bloomington, as well.

All good choices, and thanks for the advice skeeter. You make some good points we%26#39;re taking into consideration but will probably still go away after consulting our physician.

You might consider Long Grove. It%26#39;s in the N-NW suburbs.

Easy day trip from Chicago - plenty of commuters do it every day.

Have you thought about splurging at a great Chicago hotel? A night or two at the Four Seasons, a great meal, and a walk on Michigan Ave.?
