We are staying at the Omni on mag mile. what public transportation can we get to go to Evanston to see Northwestern University. I%26#39;m not real good with public transportation so the more specific, the better. Also,if anyone has suggestions for restaurants there, I would appreciate it. Thanks.
I would have put this on the Evanston forum but it doesn%26#39;t look like there is much action there.
Chicago to Evanston
The CTA L trains go to Evanston. From the Mag Mile, get on the Red Line subway at Chicago %26amp; State. Go ';north to Howard'; and take it to the end of the line. At Howard Street, board the Purple Line (same platform). Depending on where you want to be at NU, your station will be Davis, Foster or Noyes.
During weekday rush hours, the Purple Line runs into Chicago instead of only north of Howard Street. You can change from Red to Purple at Fullerton or Belmont; the Purple Line is an express that skips all the stations between Belmont and Howard.
Will leave the Restaurants question to other posters...
Chicago to Evanston
Do the trains run different on Saturdays? Thats when we probably will be going.
Yes they do. Visit transitchicago.com for details.
Evanston has all types of dining. You can do a dining search at metromix.com and chicagoreader.com.
Weekend, and weekday non-rush hours, the Purple Line runs only in Evanston/Wilmette and does not go downtown. They run only north of Howard Street; the Red Line (which goes downtown and to the South Side) runs only south of Howard Street. It%26#39;s an easy transfer; they%26#39;re on the same platform.
Metra trains also run from downtown to Evanaton. However, the downtown Chicago station is a bit further from your hotel than a CTA station.
Metra trains are much nicer than the CTA, but they don%26#39;t run as often. http://metrarail.com/Sched/cnw_n/cnwn.shtml.
The Davis St station would be best for visiting Northwestern.
Thank-you for all the help. I am ';train illiterate'; but will look at the maps and figure it out. with all the help. I f we get off at Davis St, are we close to the heart of the campus? Any ideas which way to go to get a feel of the campus? Are we in the downtown of Evanston?

Yes. Davis St from either CTA or Metra will put you in the heart of downtown Evanston and within walking distance to Northwestern.
