Unique shopping areas/districts for home accessories?

Hello,

Me and my family will be coming to the Chicago-area during Memorial Day weekend. My mother just added on a 3-season room to her house and we are on a shopping trip to help furnish the room.

Can anyone recommend any stores, shopping areas/districts, towns/suburbs where we can find home accessory stores specializing in unique items. We sort of want to stay away from the Michigan Ave. chain type stores (i.e. Crate and Barrel).

Any help would be appreciated.

Along Franklin St is the big furniture and accessory stores. Art stores, etc.. Where lots of designers, etc... shop. Some are open to the public. a few are not. Wander between Illinois St north.

Start at Illinois St. walking north.

Another great area for home accessories is Armitage Avenue...just a short trip on the brown line el. There%26#39;s great furniture and accents at Tubula Tua (www.tabulatua.com). Art Effect is fun for little things. There%26#39;s a really fantastic lamp store, can%26#39;t remember the name. And Findables has wonderful stuff. The addresses to look for start at 700 west and go about 1100 west. Not a giant destination for big furniture items, but there is some...and tons of truly unique home accents. Also great places to eat and drink, clothes shopping and, most importantly, Lori%26#39;s Shoes, which all my out of town friends insist on visiting when they%26#39;re here.

A very cool lighting store - http://www.lightology.com/

Maybe too high-end for a 3-season room, but the fixtures at ';Luxe Home'; in the Merchandise Mart are amazing.

jolculbe, I guess it depends what your budget is...Some of these places are pretty pricey.

Would you, for example, wish to spend $150+ on a platter? Or $300+ on a light fixture?

Are you looking for high-end architectural salvaged items? Art glass? Antiques? Handcrafted furniture and accessories? Fine art?

What I%26#39;d suggest is that you take a look at the websites for these places and see the prices posted, because it will save you a lot of running around the city needlessly.

That being said, you might look at the area on N. Broadway between Roscoe and Aldine (and, in particular, stop in at Equinox - the other stores are just a block away). Bloomingdales%26#39; housewares, domestics, furnishings, etc. departments are housed in the Medinah Temple. Sawbridge Studios%26#39; (handcrafted furniture, etc.) Chicago location is on Ohio Street. P.O.S.H. on N. State Street has unique plateware and glassware.
