chicago self catering accommodation

Hi I%26#39;m visiting Chicago for 2 weeks in July /August with my husband %26amp; 16yr old daughter. We%26#39;d like to find self catering accommdation not sure whats the best area to be in. So far have been looking at places near De Paul University, Old Town, Gold coast but now need help. Would like reasonably priced restaurants nearby and to be in easy travelling distance for family things to do in the evening. We%26#39;re from Ireland so keen for baseball, bowling, and whatever else families do in Chicago. Thanks

Grace

';self catering accommdation '; Excuse my ignorance - but are you looking for a hotel room with a small kitchen?

The neighborhoods you%26#39;ve listed are all perfectly fine from a tourist standpoint. You%26#39;ll find tons of restaurants nearby along with easy public transit options.

The CTA red line train will take you to both Wrigley Field (Cubs) and US Cellular Field (White Sox). For public transit information - transitchicago.com. A CTA visitor pass might be handy for your visit. You can order them ahead of time.

Try looking under B%26amp;B%26#39;s. I had friends stay last year and they were in a two bedroom flat with kitchen. Very nice. One web site is www.bbonline.com, and it takes you to another site specifically for Chicago.

If you see anything you fancy, check back here.

One thing to note, some will say that a breakfast is included, but in my friend%26#39;s case it wasn%26#39;t. Not a big deal as there were little shops everywhere and there are loads of breakfast places, but you%26#39;d want to know before you hit the sack.

If you look in the areas you mentioned, you should be okay to do and see everything you want to. The public transport here is great, taxis aren%26#39;t too pricey, and there are free trolleys in the summer. If you%26#39;re interested, www.transitchicago.com gives you all the public transport information and also has a route planner to tell you how to get from A to B.

With regard to restaurants, if you find a place in the areas you mentioned, you will be spoilt for choice so don%26#39;t even worry about that yet.

We also have great beaches so bring your cossies.

De Paul%26#39;s area is Lincoln Park, just in case you see that listed.

I was recommended to look at www.vrbo.com by the very helpful people on another forum. The apartments look good, and I think they have guesthouses too. However, I found some of the prices a little high compared to hotels. It is easier to have your own place in terms of being able to cook up a little pasta yourself, for example, but it worked out twice the price of a decent 4* hotel.

Also look at oakwood.com for short term apartment leases. These are almost all downtown highrises.

Thats a pretty good website...good quality apartments. Thanks

Thanks everyone I really appreciate your advice, will get back to you when I%26#39;ve checked it out.

Thanks everyone for your help with suggestions for accommodation. I have booked the homewood suites downtown as they have a full kitchen and the reviews on tripadvisor were very good. In addition my daughter decided that she%26#39;d like the chance to meet other teenagers and not spend all her time with us.

Now I%26#39;d appreciate your advice on things to do. We plan to go to a couple of baseball games and I wondered what you%26#39;d reccommend, afternoon or evening games, will it be cold in the evenings( it was quite cold in the bleachers at the evening game in San Francisco), what are the best seating areas to book , best way to get to the game .

Any ideas on things we must see ?

Thanks

Grace

In July/August it should still be fairly warm in the evening. I%26#39;m a baseball purist. It%26#39;s day games for me. The CTA red line train will get you from downtown to Wrigley (Addison St) or US Cellular Park (Sox/35th). The best seating is what you can afford. The closer to the field, the more expensive it will be. Bleachers at Wrigley have more of a party atmosphere. You can buy tickets directly from each team%26#39;s web site.

Take a look at metromix.com to see what%26#39;s going on during your visit. You can enter the dates of your visit and do a search. ';Must see'; depends on your particluar interests.

Good choice on hotel. The Homewood is a very nice property with large rooms, full breakfast (and evening reception on some days) and nice kitchens. The hotel is near three large grocery stores if you want to pick up food to bring back to the hotel. Additionally, the Homewood just underwent an update that included new TVs and furniture.

If you are looking for bowling, the 10 Pin is in the nearby House of Blues complex. That alley is sleek, modern and includes large video screens above the alleys. http://www.10pinchicago.com/

It definitely won%26#39;t be cool in July/August at the game. Personally, I%26#39;m more of a fan of day games, but I%26#39;m also more of a day person. Night games do have a certain magic. If you%26#39;re planning on seeing a couple of games during a short period, you may run into having the choice of one night and one day game over the course of a series, so you could try both. Temps though won%26#39;t be a problem.

If she wants to go off on her own in the Michigan Ave. shopping area nearby the hotel, that should be fine and fun for her. However, if she plans to go further away out into the neighborhoods or elsewhere, she should consider taking a phone with her and to plan out with you where she%26#39;s going before she goes so that you are aware.
