taste of chicago traffic issues

I will be arriving 7/5. I am staying at the University Club. Mapquest tells me that it is an 11 hour drive. With the Taste of Chicago taking place then, do I need to plan on being slowed down by traffic?

If you%26#39;re coming in along the Dan Ryan expressway (90/94) from the south, depending on the time of day, you might need to allow about an extra 30 minutes due to construction. http://www.danryanexpressway.com/

Doing that one in the summer quite frequently - I would give even a little more.

Did crimsonmom say an 11 hour drive?

Agree with the Dan Ryan 90/94 traffic issues, which can cause huge delays for summer weekend/holiday travel. However, it is much worse now with multiple lane closures due to construction.

The downtown/Lake Shore Drive traffic is very heavy for the 4th of July weekend and entire Taste of Chicago festivities.

Thus, allow for extra time during your travels in Chicago during that time!

Thanks for the help - yes - I did say 11 hours (precise estimate is 11 hours and 7 minutes). Mapquest says to take 65N to 90W to 290E to State Street to Monroe Street. I am coming for a short trip but I don%26#39;t want to fly as I have family members who can%26#39;t decide whether they are coming with me or not which makes purchasing plane tickets difficult. I was hoping to arrive between 4:00 and 5:00 pm and was trying to figure out how early I would have to leave to accomplish that.

As you get closer to downtown, listen to AM 780. Traffic reports every 10 minutes.

One thing that may be in your favor a little is that since July 4th is a Wednesday, a lot of people may be taking the 5th and 6th off to make a long weekend. (I am...) Often on semi-holidays like this, traffic is less awful than usual.

Normally, though, planning to arrive in Chicago between 4 and 5 in the afternoon is ';asking for it.';
