Hi- we are visiting Chicago for 7 nights from 28th August with our 21 yr old daughter and 16 yr old son. They are both into music and would like to experience whatever the city has to offer particularly Jazz and classical if there%26#39;s anything going on. Will our son be able to get into jazz venues, any recommendations would be great and any other suggestions of places to visit during our first trip to Chicago from UK..thanks
Jazz/music venues that admit 16yr olds/ first visit to ChicaTake a look at the music lisitngs in metromix.com and chicagoreader.com just before your arrival here.
The only under 21 club that%26#39;s downtown - http://www.bluechicago.com/
In Evanston, a suburb just north of Chicago - http://www.billsbluesbar.com/ - the Sunday afternoon shows are all ages. You can get there CTA train.
Jazz/music venues that admit 16yr olds/ first visit to ChicaNightingale57, keep an eye on Metromix about things coming up when you are here.
The Chicago Jazz Festival is being held in Grant Park from August 30 - September 2. There are usually pre-festival activities occurring at Symphony Hall, the Chicago Cultural Center, Daley Plaza and other places around town.
Speaking of the Chicago Cultural Center, when it gets closer to your time here, take a look at their August - September schedule. They have all types of concerts, including jazz and classical.
Also, you%26#39;ll want to look at the Jazz Institute of Chicago%26#39;s calendar for information.
You could take the train and go to Ravinia for an evening concert, if you wish.
Lastly, there is free entertainment out at the Navy Pier Beer Garden - far east end of the Pier. Could be jazz, blues, rock, etc. but wouldn%26#39;t be classical. Look at their calendar when it%26#39;s online. Although your 16-yr. old, of course, wouldn%26#39;t be served alcoholic beverage, he can still enjoy the entertainment.
Have fun deciding on what you want to experience!
Thank you both very much for your replies it%26#39;s good to know where to begin , I%26#39;ll follow up your suggestions .
Also check out the Old Town School of Folk Music. They have a wide range of concerts. Here is the website - http://www.oldtownschool.org/concerts/
