The Cultural Center website shows tours at 1:15 Wed. I can%26#39;t determine if that is the only way to see the building and all it has to offer, or can one visit and wander around without it being a tour? We want to go to Henry Clarke House Wed for tour at noon, and know we can%26#39;t do both, and will only be in Chicago late Mon thru Thurs.
Another question, has anyone attended the concerts offered at St James Cathedral?
Chicago Cultural Center re visiting
You can walk through the Cultural Center any time it is open. The tour is just a narrative. Try to tie it in with a visit to its neighbors, the Art Institute, Millennium Park, Buckingham Fountain and the Loop.
Haven%26#39;t been to a concert at St. James for a long time - they used to be outdoors and free. The church is on a lovely stretch of homes on the near north side, though it%26#39;s not as peaceful a place as it once was.
Glad to see you are interested in Clarke House. The more unusual house in the Prairie Avenue District is Glessner House - it has a more complete history and a great deal of the original furnishings. Clarke House is older, but is a recreation of what was there. You can buy a combo ticket to see both houses.
Chicago Cultural Center re visiting
There are also some concerts at the Cultural Center from time to time...not sure it%26#39;s a regular event (ie same time every day). The building itself is beautiful, Tiffany glass all over the place! Try also to explore the South Loop a bit while you are there, the area was the fature of an extensive article in Chicago magazine for June, I believe.
The Cultural Center offers frree lunch time concerts with a different theme each day of the week. We plan to go there for sure. The other buildings with stained glass works of art we plan to see: Marshall Fields, Marquette Building and the Art Institute. (See, I%26#39;ve been doing my homework)
Both Glessner House and Henry Clarke House offer free tours on Wednesday on a first come first serve basis. Don%26#39;t know if we can do both on this trip, since we only have 3 full days and I%26#39;ve planned on probably too many things to see and do already.
If I print my trip planner can you critique it for me to make the most of my time?
Must be wonderful to live in Chicago and have so many options.
Since you are talking about the Clarke/Glessner houses, you might consider picking up at Borders or some other good bookstore the current issue of Chicago magazine, which has a huge feature on the South Loop area and all kinds of places to check out and restaurants to visit. I can vouch for the fact that Cuatro is excellent! Not that it sounds like you are lacking in activities....
Oops...sorry...I repeated some of my earlier message. Duh!!!
